Vivid Memories and New Discoveries

One of my favorite memories as a child is laying down under the Christmas tree at night while the rest of the house is dark and still, looking up through the brightly lit branches and gazing at the brilliant reflections from the ornaments. I would imagine tiny inhabitants of this tree city. This tree world. There were so many nooks and crannies and places to explore! I loved the detail – the intricate detail and contrast between the shining silver and gold ornaments reflecting bright white Christmas lights against the pine greens and browns from the tree itself, all surrounded in the blackness of an infinite house. It’s one of my most vivid, cherished, and calming memories I have.

I’ve never known anything quite like that feeling. Nothing else made me feel the way I felt looking up through those branches on those cozy, secure winter nights until I found this image. Technically, it’s a photo of an open star cluster in Scorpius named M7. But emotionally, it’s my childhood Christmas tree.
It won’t work unless you turn off the lights in the room and blow it up to full screen… Try it. Do it now! Look at the millions of sparkling lights! Shining there… twinkling like Christmas lights. Now, hold your finger up to the screen. Try and count the glitter under your fingertip. See all those tiny specks of light? Every one of those is a star. Every one of those is a Sun.
Every. One.
I love the detail – the intricate detail and contrast between the shining silver and gold ornaments reflecting bright white lights against the blackness of an infinite universe.
